Globalization has brought the world so close together economically technologically and the culturally that national borders no longer appear as robust as they once did. The concept of state sovereignty established by the Peace of Westphalia (1648), now faces new challenges.
In the economic sphere institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO),the International Monetary fund (IMF) and the World Bank exert influence over the polices of individual states.Develpoing nations bound by the conditions attached to loans often find their autonomy in economic policy making significantly constrained.Similary multinational corporation's can some times become so powerful that they're able to exert pressure on government decision making.
Concepts such as human rights and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) have also altered the traditional definition of Sovereignty as a state internal affairs can how become a matter of global concern.Furthermore the internet and social media have further weakened state control over information.
However it would be inaccurate to claim that to an end. States remains the primary units for security, legislation and diplomacy and major powers retain the capacity to shape global rule's to serve their own interests.
Ultimately globalization has not eliminated sovereignty rather it has redefined it. The challenge for states today lies in striking a balance between global cooperation and the pursuits of their own national interests.
