The world is becoming advanced and now countries is dependent on the internet for communication, banking, government services, and businesses. In the past, countries mainly protected themselves from threats through land, sea, or air. Today, another important space needs protection called cyberspace. Cyber attacks can cross borders within seconds, making cybersecurity an important part of International Relations. Because of this, cybersecurity has also become an important issue in International Relations. Cybersecurity means protecting computers, networks, information, and digital systems from harmful attacks. A cyber attack can affect a country without any army crossing its border. The growing importance of cybersecurity can be clearly understood through real-life events. One important example is Estonia, which experienced a major cyber attack in 2007. Estonia faced a large wave of cyber attacks that affected banks, media, government services and other important systems. The incident showed that a country may face serious security problems. It also encouraged NATO to give more attention to cyber defence and international cooperation.

Another example is the WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017. It affected hundreds of thousands of computers in many countries. In the United Kingdom, several NHS organisations were affected, causing problems for some healthcare services. The UK believed that North Korean hackers linked to the Lazarus Group were behind the attack. This example showed that a cyber attack in one part of the world can create problems across different countries. (National Cyber Security Centre)

Cybersecurity is also changing the way countries think about their national security. In traditional conflicts, countries mainly focused on soldiers, weapons, and borders. Today, governments also have to protect digital systems, communication networks and financial institutions. Along with digital security, International cooperation is also important because cyber attacks can cross borders very easily. Countries should share information, improve their cyber defences, and work together along with different countries and organizations when serious attacks happen.

NATO for example has developed cyber defence capabilities and working willingly on cyber threats.

In the future, technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital systems may create both new opportunities and new security challenges. Therefore, cybersecurity will likely remain an important part of International Relations. Countries will need not only strong technology but also communication, proper planning, and cooperation to deal with future challenging threats.

Cybersecurity is no longer only a technical issue. It has become an important part of how countries protect their national interests, maintain security and build relationships with other states by the means of digital systems.
